Classé parmi les dix substances chimiques les plus dangereuses au monde, le plomb menace gravement la santé des enfants. Lors d’un café média à Douala, l’UNICEF, le MINSANTE, le MINEPDED et des experts ont appelé les journalistes à devenir de véritables ambassadeurs de la prévention.

L’UNICEF Cameroun, en partenariat avec le ministère de la Santé publique (MINSANTE) et le ministère de l’Environnement, de la Protection de la Nature et du Développement Durable (MINEPDED), a réuni ce 12 août 2025 à Douala des représentants institutionnels, experts, acteurs de la société civile et journalistes pour un café média consacré à la santé environnementale des enfants, avec un focus sur l’intoxication au plomb. Selon l’Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS), le plomb fait partie des dix substances chimiques les plus dangereuses pour la santé humaine. Il est responsable de 1% du fardeau mondial des maladies et pourrait être à l’origine de 15 à 20 % des retards mentaux dans les pays en développement. Aucun niveau d’exposition n’est considéré comme sûr. Au Cameroun, une étude portant sur 70 enfants à Yaoundé a révélé que 31,43 % avaient un taux de plombémie supérieur ou égal à 10 mg/dL, et 12,86 % présentaient un retard de développement. De son côté, le Centre de Recherche et d’Éducation pour le Développement (CREPD) estimait en 2019 que plus de cinq millions d’enfants étaient menacés par le plomb dans le pays.

Un poison invisible qui menace la santé et l’avenir des enfants

Les principales sources d’exposition restent multiples : batteries usagées au plomb-acide, peintures au plomb encore présentes dans le bâtiment et l’artisanat, carburants plombés ayant contaminé sols et eaux, déchets électroniques recyclés sans précaution, émissions industrielles, plomberie utilisant des soudures au plomb et production artisanale. Pour le Dr Ngum Bélyse, spécialiste santé à l’UNICEF, le danger vient de son caractère invisible : « On ne le voit pas, on ne le ressent pas, mais il est partout autour de nous. Une fois l’intoxication installée, elle est irréversible. La seule solution, c’est la prévention ».

Le Pr Lemnyuy William, délégué départemental du MINEPDED du Wouri, a présenté les efforts du MINEPDED pour réduire cette pollution, notamment par le renforcement des réglementations, la surveillance des sites à risque et la sensibilisation des industriels aux alternatives sans plomb. Le Dr Ngum Bélyse, a insisté sur l’importance d’une mobilisation à plusieurs niveaux : «  Il faut partir des communautés, mobiliser les familles, puis porter le plaidoyer auprès des décideurs afin de renforcer la réglementation ».

La rencontre a également permis de présenter la plateforme AGORA, un outil de formation en ligne destiné aux journalistes. Objectif : leur donner les connaissances et les outils nécessaires pour produire des contenus capables de mobiliser l’opinion publique et d’influencer les politiques publiques. En clôture, l’UNICEF a réaffirmé son engagement à accompagner le Cameroun dans ses efforts de prévention.  « Protéger les enfants contre les risques environnementaux comme l’exposition au plomb, c’est garantir leur droit fondamental à grandir en bonne santé, à apprendre et à s’épanouir. Chaque action de prévention aujourd’hui est un investissement dans l’avenir du Cameroun» a rappelé Nadine Perrault, représentante de l’UNICEF au Cameroun.

La campagne nationale de riposte contre l’épidémie de rougeole a officiellement démarré ce lundi 13 août dans la région du Littoral, ciblant trois districts de santé : Cité des Palmiers, Logbaba et Yabassi. Jusqu’au 17 août, les équipes sanitaires se déploieront pour vacciner les enfants âgés de neuf mois à neuf ans, aussi bien dans les formations sanitaires que dans les communautés.

À Logbaba, le chef de district, le Dr Ngufor Rita épouse Moulango, a annoncé un objectif ambitieux : immuniser 92 000 enfants sur une population d’environ 300 000 habitants. « Nous sommes privilégiés d’être parmi les neuf districts de santé choisis dans tout le pays pour mener cette riposte », a-t-elle indiqué.

Les équipes iront au-delà des structures de santé habituelles, en intervenant dans les quartiers, ménages, marchés et autres lieux de rassemblement. Chaque enfant vacciné contre la rougeole-rubéole recevra une carte de vaccination rouge. Si un enfant n’a pas complété ses vaccins de routine, il recevra également les doses manquantes, accompagnées d’un carnet de vaccination bleu. Pour James Longsi, chef de l’unité communication, cette campagne arrive à un moment crucial : « Nous sommes à la croisée des chemins entre la fin des vacances et la rentrée scolaire. La rougeole étant une maladie très contagieuse, notamment en milieu infantile, il est important de protéger les enfants avant la reprise des classes. Cette vaccination est gratuite et vise à rapprocher les services de santé des populations ».

Sensibiliser et rassurer les parents

Du côté de l’hôpital de district de la Cité des Palmiers, Ngo Nsanga Pauline, aide-soignante, rappelle la gravité de la maladie : « La rougeole est une maladie infectieuse à surveillance épidémiologique qui se transmet par les gouttelettes ou le contact. Elle se caractérise par de la fièvre, une éruption cutanée, souvent accompagnées de toux et de rhume». Elle insiste sur l’importance de la prévention : « La vaccination est un moyen essentiel pour se protéger contre cette maladie, surtout que cela fait au moins trois mois que nous sommes en épidémie avec de nombreux cas. Les effets secondaires sont généralement minimes, comme une légère fièvre, que les parents peuvent surveiller à la maison avant de revenir à l’hôpital si cela persiste ». Dans la file d’attente, plusieurs parents témoignent de leur engagement à protéger leurs enfants. Akanga Jeannette, venue avec son petit-fils, explique : « Ce qui m’a motivée aujourd’hui à le faire vacciner, c’est pour qu’il soit en bonne santé et qu’il ne soit pas contaminé par la rougeole». Nognong Giselle, également présente, adresse un message à toutes les mères : « Je vous invite, chères mamans, à vacciner vos enfants contre la rougeole, car il vaut mieux prévenir la maladie que la guérir. Mettons nos enfants à l’abri pour les garder en bonne santé ». L’aide-soignante appelle les familles à dépasser les préjugés : « Il ne faut pas écouter les rumeurs. Le vaccin est le meilleur moyen de protéger l’enfant. Les enfants d’aujourd’hui seront le Cameroun de demain, il est donc crucial de les vacciner et de les protéger contre les maladies». Cette initiative, intégrée à une stratégie nationale de riposte, vise à limiter la propagation de la maladie et à renforcer la couverture vaccinale des enfants.

Le Collectif Diaspora Médicale Camerounaise (CODIMED237) s’insurge avec véhémence contre les attaques répétées de l’Ordre National des Médecins du Cameroun (ONMC) à l’encontre des professionnels de la médecine de la Diaspora.

Un pays émergent se reconnaît à la qualité de son offre médicale. Pour ce qui est du Cameroun, malgré les efforts considérables et louables du Gouvernement, le système de santé du Cameroun et l’offre des soins ont encore beaucoup de progrès à faire pour satisfaire la demande multiforme et croissante d’une population grandissante et demandeuse de soins de qualité. Et au lieu de mobiliser toutes les énergies pour remédier à cette situation, certains acteurs semblent préférer envenimer et compromettre une situation déjà précaire. C’est à cet effet que le Collectif Diaspora Médicale Camerounaise  a, lors d’un point de presse tenu le 13 août 2025, dénoncé avec vigueur les attaques répétées de l’Ordre National des Médecins du Cameroun (ONMC) contre les praticiens de la diaspora. Ces médecins camerounais de l’étranger pourtant inscrits à l’Ordre et détenteurs d’autorisations officielles délivrées par le Ministère de la Santé font face à une véritable guerre d’usure : campagnes de dénigrement, obstacles administratifs arbitraires, fermetures punitives de cliniques, sanctions financières lourdes, et désormais une stigmatisation publique orchestrée par leurs pairs de l’ONMC.

Un paradoxe intenable et un précédent dangereux

Cette situation est d’autant plus paradoxale que, depuis plusieurs années, les plus hautes autorités de l’État, au premier rang desquelles le Président de la République, appellent la diaspora à contribuer activement au développement du Cameroun. L’Ambassadeur du Cameroun en France multiplie les initiatives pour tendre la main à ses compatriotes, et des projets structurants comme Diaspora Santé ont été mis en place en collaboration avec le Ministère de la Santé. Or, pendant que l’État ouvre les portes, certains responsables de l’ONMC préfèrent dresser des murs. Une partie de la hiérarchie médicale locale – souvent juge et partie car propriétaires de cliniques privées, parfois en violation des textes – perçoit les praticiens de la diaspora non comme des alliés mais comme des concurrents menaçant leurs rentes personnelles.

Un engagement patriotique menacé

Pourtant, les faits parlent d’eux-mêmes : la diaspora médicale organise régulièrement des missions humanitaires gratuites dans des zones enclavées ; Elle facilite le don d’équipements modernes et de plateaux techniques ; elle assure la formation continue des médecins et du personnel local ; elle participe activement à la création de cliniques de qualité, accessibles aux populations ; elle contribue à réduire la dépendance coûteuse et inefficace aux évacuations sanitaires. Ces initiatives, fruits d’un patriotisme désintéressé, sont aujourd’hui menacées par une cabale corporatiste.

Une voix collective s’élève

Le point de presse du 13 août 2025, co-dirigé par des figures de proue de la diaspora médicale, a permis de dresser un état des lieux alarmant. Aux côtés du Dr Samuel Dongmo, Ambassadeur de la Paix en sa qualité de Président du Haut Conseil des Camerounais de l’Extérieur, ont pris la parole le Dr Thomas Kana, le Dr Guy Jounda, le Dr Alain Jounda, le Dr Charlotte Nkembe et plusieurs autres praticiens engagés. Tous, d’une seule voix, ont dénoncé une dérive dangereuse pour l’avenir sanitaire du Cameroun. « Ce n’est pas une querelle entre confrères. C’est une question de vie ou de mort pour les patients camerounais. » a résumé l’un d’entre eux. Un appel solennel au Président de la République et à l’opinion publique. Les médecins de la diaspora n’ont pas choisi la confrontation. Ils réclament seulement ce que la loi et l’éthique imposent : un dialogue transparent, constructif et respectueux avec leurs homologues de l’ONMC et les autorités sanitaires. Mais si ce bras de fer perdure, c’est tout l’édifice construit depuis des années autour du rapprochement entre le Cameroun et sa diaspora qui risque de s’écrouler. Quel Camerounais installé à l’étranger prendra encore le risque d’investir son expertise et ses ressources dans un pays où des corporatismes locaux étouffent toute initiative ? En vérité, il ne s’agit pas seulement d’une querelle professionnelle. Il s’agit d’un choix de société : le Cameroun acceptera-t-il d’accueillir ses propres compétences pour construire son avenir, ou continuera-t-il à sacrifier la santé de son peuple sur l’autel des intérêts privés ? Le peuple camerounais, qui souffre quotidiennement d’un accès limité aux soins de qualité, attend une réponse claire. Et cette réponse ne peut venir que des plus hautes autorités de la République. Le Cameroun, résolument engagé dans sa marche vers le progrès, se fera avec toutes ses filles et ses fils. La santé y est un facteur clé. En conséquence, la boulimie de quelques-uns ne saurait primer sur le bien être de toute une nation.
